The U11 beach team of Giani Boerner & Ruby Smith took home the U12 Gold medal in North East Beach Volleyball tournament action at Hampton Beach, NH.
In a hybridized format, and playing their first sand tournament together, Ruby & Giani posted a 3-2 pool record playing in U14, then won the U12 final 2-0.
The Boston Globe's Brandon Chase wrote a great feature on the relationship between SMASH Volleyball's Richard Barton & Lucas Coffeen ahead of their MIAA South sectional showdown...
Barton's Newton North team and Coffeen's Newton South team will square off in a Monday night match at Quincy HS to determine who will advance to the State semi-final.
Other MIAA sectionals on Tuesday night will feature SMASH coaches as well, with Steve Keller and Lincoln-Sudbury taking on Natick in the Central final, and Konst Dimov and Preston Yong's Boston Latin School facing off against Winchester in the North final.
These three matches alone will feature over 25 athletes who play for SMASH Boys travel teams.
Fourteen SMASH Girls travel teams competed at the NERVA Championships on May 5, 2019. (Ten of these teams were competing above age level.)
SMASH won the New England regional title in U18 (seventh time in last eight years), and in U14 (sixth time in last eight years).
With two of the Top 5 volleyball teams in New England (SMASH 17s & 18s Attack) sidelined for the regional championships due to NERVA attendance rules, SMASH still placed four teams in the Top 10 in New England U18. SMASH 18s placed 1st, SMASH 16s placed 3rd, 17s Black Ice placed 6th, and 18s Blizzard placed 10th.
In U16, SMASH placed four teams in the Top 12, and five teams in the Top 20. 16s eXtreme placed 3rd, SMASH 15s placed 8th, SMASH 14s and SMASH 16s Sparks placed 11th, and 15s Power placed 19th.
SMASH 13s were champions of 14 Open, with 13s Thunder and SMASH 12s placing 2nd and 3rd in 14A. SMASH 12s Energy placed 2nd in 13A.
Congratulations to all teams for such a strong season of growth and improvement. Keep up your hard work this summer!
