Answers to commonly asked questions:

  • SMASH 16s and older had two tryout dates this summer. The Tryout on the 17th is the third option. If you attended a summer tryout, you should NOT attend the tryout on the 17th.

  • Players should try out with their own age. Even if you would like to be considered for an older team, attend the tryout for your age. The same coaches will be doing all the evaluations and will invite you to the appropriate call-back.

  • This is for SMASH Girls only. Boys tryouts will be announced separately.

  • You can use the same registration link to sign up for any of the tryout dates.

A note about the 2021-2022 SMASH season:

SMASH will return to practicing in the Newton/Weston area for the most part.

We anticipate that offers to join SMASH teams will include the following information at the time of the offer:

  • Coaches’ names
  • Practice Schedule
  • Competition Schedule, including out-of-region travel plans and postseason
  • Total Cost

A note about competition schedules:

These will be completed before teams are finalized. A complicating factor right now is that most USAV Qualifiers and major JVA tournaments have not announced their dates yet, and the Triple Crown NIT (one of the most competitive events in the country) has not made its invitations, although we’ve been in touch about our top teams attending.

While we can’t give an exact schedule, here is the general plan, with specifics to be filled in once tournament dates are announced:

All travel teams at these age groups will compete in:

  • 4-5 days of local competition (either NERVA or a new AAU invite-only Champions League);

  • Winterfest

  • Boston Festival

  • 3 other multi-day tournaments:

    • For 18s, 17s, 16s: likely Triple Crown NIT (if accepted) and 2 Qualifiers

    • For 18s Attack, 17s Black Ice, and 16s Sparks: likely 1 Qualifier and 2 other large tournaments that do not require air travel (like RI Rumble, SpikeFest, and Fun@TheSun)

  • Nationals

    • For 18s and 18s Attack, we are planning to attend USAV Nationals for 18s which is at the end of April, as informal polling of 17s and 18s players indicates that seniors in HS want to finish at the end of April and not into June. We will register both teams for the Patriot division and then attempt to earn a bid at a qualifier, Boston, or the NERVA regional bid.

    • For 16s and 17s teams, including 17s Black Ice and 16s Sparks, we are planning to attend the AAU Nationals in Orlando at the end of June.
