SMASH Volleyball 'National Model' Program
Volleyball Athletes in Massachusetts, for the first time EVER, will
have the opportunity to train according to the 'National Model' read below!
** SMASH may train'National Model Program' teams in 15+Unders, 16+Unders, 17's, and 18's click here
These teams have separate tryouts, as they offer 4 days/week training (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sun) and will compete in more tournaments, cost a great deal more, and players will be unable to compete in Winter/Spring sports at their schools. The first tryout for this 'National Model Program" was held on Nov. 8. The final tryout will be as part of the Nov. 22 tryout for the 16+Unders and 15+Unders (10-3 at Newton North HS on Sunday, Nov. 22) and as part of the 18's/17's call-backs from 12:30-3, also on Nov. 22 at Newton North H.S.
The path to the development of the strongest individual and team volleyball skills is well-established in the country and the world. It is quite simple: Players should receive
aHundreds, thousands, of reinforced contacts with proper and constant feedback
aMANY regular opportunities to compete at the highest possible level
aTraining several times/week throughout the year, and for a period of many years
In many areas of the country-(west coast, mid-west, Rocky Mountains, southwest, Texas, Florida…) this type of training is available, and the development of skilled players far outstrips that of New England. This is shown in the pure number of teams in every age group that are far stronger than the top teams from this area, and, in the scarcity of New England players on any of the stronger college teams in the country. Most NCAA tournament teams in New England have rosters comprised of players outside of placeNew England. The athletes in other areas are not superior, but their training is! Commonly, in other areas of the country, players train 3, 4, or 5 days each week for 6 or 7 months, and they begin in 5th or 6th grade. There is a New England precedent for this type of training: in USA Swimming (the equivalent of USA Juniors Volleyball) swimmers often practice twice/day, 5 or 6 days each week, from September through August. The athletes make the impressive commitment, and their families are able to meet the considerable financial requirements.
SMASH will offer this level of training in an inaugural program in the 2009-2010 season.
SMASH Volleyball will offer this training to
The 15+under age group and the 16+under age group
and, now, to
The 17's and 18's age group: Have a clear idea of your ability to do this at the 17's/18's call-back on Sun., Nov. 22, 12:30-3!!!
Here are some details:
aThis program will include 68 practice days (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 6:30-8:45, and 4 hours on Sundays, in the morning/early afternoon)
aPractices begin the week of December 13, maybe Dec. 6, and practices will be at sites in Newton, MA
aAthletes entirely dedicated to volleyball will and should try out.
aSMASH will offer 20 dates of tournament play in 11 tournaments, in New England, the East, and in target tournaments in other areas. The training/completive season is from Dec-May; additional travel is possible.
aPotential will be a MAJOR factor in team selection: our coaches will train!
aRosters will be fairly small, approximately 10 players, and, as has always been the case, all players will have regular playing time (i.e. no `subs')
aEach team will have 2, maybe 3 coaches
**** Team members will most likely NOT be able to play for teams at their schools during the winter or spring seasons ****
aCost will be $5000-$6000, for all expenses (travel, training, coaching, gym rental, tournament fees, administrative costs and all others except personal expenses during travel.)
TRYOUT DETAILS:
- 1st Tryout (completed): Sunday, Nov. 8, 10 AM- 2 PM
: 18's/17's: on Sunday, Nov. 22, 12:30-3
