About Travel Teams
SMASH enters teams in NE Region USAV Juniors competition. Some teams play outside New England. We have competitive tryouts and train the teams once/week (sometimes twice) from January through April/May. Our Sunday practices are 4-5 hours and include mandatory physical training. Our 16's and 18's teams have regularly been amongst New England's strongest, and have won several NE Championships. Click here for some of our 2007 results. Last season SMASH 18's was the top Massachusetts team, 2nd in NE; both SMASH 16's and SMASH 18's were Silver Medalists in the New England Regional Championships. In 2005 SMASH had 3 of the top 15 18+Under teams in NE, the 3rd 16's team and our 14's finished 3rd in the NE Regionals. In 2004 our top 18's finished the season ranked #1 in New England.
Athletes train and compete in their age groups. Players are selected on the basis of performance at the competitive tryouts. Teams train on Sundays, some on additional days. Competition ranges from the local, eastern Massachusetts area, to the New England, East Coast, and some years, national arena. Details of cost and schedule vary according to the exact team.
SMASH Travel Team Philosophy
SMASH treats all players as serious athletes, and expects committment, respect, effort, reliability, and adherence to all policies. We take our tryout process seriously, and feel every player selected should benefit from competition. Therefore all players receive regular playing time. We have no "bench" players.
Competition
NE Juniors volleyball has several levels of play:
“Power League”- for 16’s and 18’s only - the top 8 teams in all of NE. Must qualify at January qualifier
“Regional Level” – the next 8 (maybe 12) teams –also must qualify at tournament (Feb)
“State Level” – In Massachusetts, the 50-70 teams not competing in the above levels
We do not allow players to drive long distances to tournaments, and we require seatbelts.
